Start your own Easter Traditions!

Easter is a great opportunity to spend time with family and friends, and many of us look forward to this time of the year because of the traditions associated with Easter.  Dying colored Easter eggs or going on Easter eggs hunts are timeless classics!  Since we love to bake, we have included a couple of Easter baking ideas that could become traditions in your household.  Enjoy, and Happy Easter from The Bakery Spot!

Easter Basket Cupcakes

Start with a classic yellow or chocolate cake mix (we like this yellow cake from The Fresh Loaf)

Frost the top of the cupcakes with vanilla buttercream.  If you don’t already have one, consider trying this one from The Food Network!

In a mixing bowl, combine flaked coconut with several drops of green food coloring.  Once your coconut is evenly coated, sprinkle liberally on the top of your cupcakes.  Next, drop a few jellybeans on top of the coconut, and finish off your Easter Basket Cupcake with a Twizzler as the handle.  Your family will love helping out with this fun tradition…almost as much as they will love eating the cupcakes!

Easter Bunny Cake

Similar to the cupcake idea above, start by making a classic cake mix and vanilla buttercream.  However, this time, bake the cake in a round tin.  (We like the 8” size, but any size will work!)  Once the cake is baked and cooled, remove it from the tin and cut in half so that you have two semi-circle shaped pieces of cake.

Frost the top of one of the pieces, and then stack the other piece on top.  Now, stand the cake up on its flat edge and frost the rest of the cake.  Then liberally sprinkle coconut (you can leave it white, or color it green, yellow, purple, or any other traditional Easter color) all over the outside of your cake.

Finally, put one big dollop of buttercream on one end of the cake to create a tail, and then decorate the front of the cake to look like a rabbit’s face.  You can simply print clipart online, mount it on stiff paper, and attach to the front of your cake….or you can get creative and make your own rabbit face!

babka bread easter tradition

Babka Bread

For those who enjoy baking breads, we recommend baking Babka bread as a new tradition for your family at Easter.  Babka, which is Polish for “grandmother,”  is a traditional Eastern European sweet bread.  The great thing about this bread is you can include whichever flavors you enjoy the most.  Like any bread, Babka will take a bit of time to make, but the taste is worth the effort!

We found this great tutorial with step-by-step pictures: How to make Babka Bread

If you don’t like raisins, feel free to substitute your favorite flavors.  We’ve seen everything from orange and lemon peel to currants to dried diced fruit.  Experiment and create your own Babka tradition!
